I have been making soft furnishings for many years in the Chichester and Bognor Regis areas. Here’s a little about how I got into it and what I love about it.
My mum sparked my interest in sewing when I was young, and after leaving school I studied Soft Furnishings at Chichester College. This was a great starting block for beginning work on a self employed basis.
The thing I love most about all sewing, whether it’s curtains, dressmaking, bag-making or anything else, is that the more you do it the more you learn. It’s an on-going process of creativity and gaining experience.
Different sewing skills often cross over from one type of textile work to another, and so as I’m pretty much always working on my own projects in addition to work, I am constantly building on my existing skills.
I love being self-employed instead of working for a big company. I get to meet my customers personally, and take time and care in my work to make sure everything is finished to a very high standard, even if it’s just a teeny little job.
My job is also great because I get to listen to the radio all day and have a cup of tea whenever I like…
